Introduction to UVC Output for Thermal Imaging Cameras

UVC output for thermal imaging refers to a technology where thermal imaging equipment complies with the USB Video Class protocol. It converts infrared thermal radiation into thermal images (usually pseudo-color visible-light video streams) and outputs the footage in real time through a USB port.
Its core advantages lie in full standardization and plug-and-play functionality. Any general software that supports the UVC protocol (such as VLC and OBS) or mainstream operating systems can directly recognize the device as a regular webcam without dedicated driver installation, greatly streamlining system integration and development workflows.
In thermal imaging applications, UVC output transmits final video frames that have undergone internal temperature calculation and image rendering by the device’s built-in processor, rather than raw infrared data streams. While this compromises flexibility for in-depth post-processing data analysis on the backend, it delivers ultra-low latency, outstanding cross-platform compatibility, and the capability to turn sophisticated thermal imaging hardware into a universal video source. This technology is widely adopted for integration into fire helmets, night vision devices, handheld thermal cameras, FPV drones and other devices.
